DETERMINANTS OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICES IN NIGERIA SECONDARY SCHOOL:


CHAPTER ONE
1.0            INTRODUCTION
1.1            Background of the Study
Presently, the world is experiencing considerable social evils among the students and the situation in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State is not different.
Examination malpractices among secondary school students is one of the greatest problem facing education industries in Nigeria today. The cankerworm of examination malpractices as done incalculable damage not only to our education system but also to our nation life, the economy, social life and the general indiscipline in schools gross displacement of the talents and wastage of our national resources are some of social vices. What then is examination malpractice?
According to oxford advanced dictionary, examination as it relates to education is an assessment tool used to determine the level of learning of students and pupils’’. The results of such examination are used to effect promotion into a new class, graduate from one course to another as base for possession of strength and job placements.
Malpractice is wrong doing, misconduct or dishonesty, or improper practice for personal gain. Examination malpractice is therefore the violation of rules and regulation guiding the conduct of examination in accordance with specified, norms set up by the examination institution. It also involves the various methods employed by candidate to cheat before or during examination.
Examination Malpractice is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria or any part of the world. Is as old as examination it self. Recent investigation suggests that examination malpractices are not the hand work of candidates alone, but a syndicated operation involving are communities, school authorities and invigilators. Examination malpractice is an act of any instance, of improper professional conduct. According to Longman dictionary examination malpractice is the act of failing to do a professional duty properly, examination malpractice is a world wide issue. It is only the degree at which it is carried out that differs. The Nigeria especially in tertiary institution is reaching an alarming, situation in view of this several seminars, have been held several books have been written countless, campaign have been made all of these are effort to stop examination malpractices and promote good student habit in the school.
Adeyegbe,(1994) observed that the first recorded incident of examination malpractices in Nigeria was the leakage of the Cambridge school certificate examination of [1990] according to Omotoso [1990]  this incident obviously happened 38 years period to the establishment of the west African examination council.
Examination malpractices continued at a lower and in simple and little from right up to the 50s and very early 6os from all indication there were no recorded cases of connivance aiding and abetting by invigilators, supervisor staff of examination bodies of this heinous practices.
Passing examination to secure certificate is to many people, the main goal to school rather, than acquiring useful with demands of modern life hence, passing examination has now become  life and death struggle’’.
One can only guess as to the causes but there is no doubt that the civil war between 1966 and 1970 caused the slow moving value change.
The sudden wealth brought on by the discovery of crude all in the quota to the collapse of our traditional values and the emergence of wealth no matter how acquired as a sign of success people merely pass through education to obtained   certificate, certificate is used as a barometer  for security.
Examination malpractice has now becomes a vicious once students get involved and go through undetected, they easily became to addicted, and therefore fine tune critical path as means of obtaining   academics success from primary to the tertiary level.
Examination malpractices occur in its various forms through out Nigeria and there is no state that could be exonerated from it. We are facing an  educational crisis  which very few of us seem to realize in Nigeria today.
There are various forms of examination malpractice are classifies as ,examination leakage, impersonation, cheating collision and swooping of script, smuggling of answer scripts, certificate, racketeering  and assault of examination administration.
There many reasons why people are involved  in examination malpractices the motive for  participation in organized  cheating differs from one to another, for instance, invigilators cheat solely for money while school  authorities join the conspiracy out of the desire for high performance records for their schools.

Community also involve because of the anxiety for the future of their children and locality since good grade will ensure their indigene’s admission in to higher institution and offer prospects for good placements.
1.2            Statement of Problem
Examination as earlier            said, is an assessment tool  used to determine the level of learning of student and pupils, the result of such examination are used to effect promotion in to a new class, graduate from one course to another as a basis for possession,     of strength and job placement.
