PERCEIVED VALUES OF EXERCISE FOR HEALTH AMONG COLLEGE OF EDUCATION STUDENTS
IN IKERE-EKITI, EKITI STATE
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
The World Health Organization (WHO 1948) has long affirmed that health is a condition of complete physical, social and mental well being and not just the absence of diseases or infirmities, but noted by Crespo (et al, 2000); a portion of these various health problems result from inadequate physical exercise. Record from JAJA revealed that disproportionately high rates of numerous serious degenerative and chronic diseases, particularly all forms of cardiovascular diseases. It is also likely that a portion of these cardiovascular diseases result from inadequate physical exercise.
It is a common knowledge that regular exercise promotes healthy living. People who enjoy regular exercise as well as physical educators and coaches have found this statement to be real in their lives. The effect of exercise on health cannot therefore be overemphasized. Physical exercise is self explanatory, and is more or less characterized by varied levels of intensity. Up till now, there has been an underlying interest in the role of exercise in promoting health. According to ()gden, 2000) research has examined the possible physical and psychological benefits of exercise. (Smith and Jacobson, 1989) summarized the physical benefits of exercise as follows;
·                    Improved cardiovascular function
·                    Increased muscle size and strength and ligament strength for maintaining posture, preventing joint instability and decreasing back pain.
·                    Improve work effort
·                    Changing body composition
Exercise is another important component of health promotion. Clinicians and researchers (Anspaugh, Hamrick and Rosata, 1994), Eddelman and Mandle, 1998), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (1996), examining the relationship between health and physical fitness have found that a regular exercise program can promote health by improving the function of the circulatory system and the lungs, decreasing cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein concentrations, lowering body weight by increasing calorie expenditure, delaying degenerative changes such as osteoporosis and improving flexibility and overall muscle strength and endurance. On the other hand, exercise can be harmful if it is not started gradually and increased slowly in accordance with the individual’s response. An exercise program should be designed specifically for the individual with consideration given to age, physical condition and any known cardiovascular or other risk factors. An appropriate exercise program can have a significantly positive effect on the individual performance capacity, appearance and general state of physical and emotional health. Wall, (2000).
Daniel (2005) asserted that exercise is an important key to having good health. Exercise has been observed to contribute positively in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Mental health benefits and derived from exercise;
·                    Reduced Anxiety: Best result could be achieved with aerobic exercise and best results could be achieved after weeks of regular exercise.
·                    Reduced Depression: Best result could be achieved after weeks of regular exercise best when done several times a week, best with more vigorous exercise and best for those who are more depressed.
·                    Achieving Zone Focus/Flow: A flow is the state an athlete assumes in which he or she is capable of achieving optimum performance. According to Patrick (2005), the ability to concentrate is very important for achieving peak performance in any endeavour.
 Furthermore, in confirmation of the benefits of exercise, The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Surgeon General have all issued statements that recommend placing an emphasis on adopting physical activity into one’s life style. The intention is to make the public more aware of the health benefits associated with participation in various physical activities.
Apart from the role exercise play in alleviating chronic diseases such as coronary artery disease and diabetes, its also help in disease prevention. Exercise help in the removal of waste materials from the body through sweat, improve chances of natural sleep and relaxation, aids neuromuscular coordination, managing psychological problem disorders and improves cells and tissue respiration (Darley 2002).
Conclusively, participating in physical activity is important to maintain a healthy lifestyles, consequently, this project work discusses the following issues.
1.                 The Concept of Health
2.                 Exercise, Types of Exercise and Values of Exercise
3.                 Role of Exercise in Disease Prevention
4.                 Exercise Prescription
5.                 Health Habit of the College of Education Students in Ikere Ekiti
